Death Down Under Symposium - Program + Registrations

"Death Down Under: Toward an Australian Death Studies" is an interdisciplinary symposium hosted by the Australian Death Studies Society and the DeathTech Research Team at the University of Melbourne. Bringing together scholars from across Australia, the event explores how death, dying, grief, memorialisation, and body disposal are understood within distinctly Australian cultural, social, political, and environmental contexts.

The symposium invites critical and creative engagement with topics including Indigenous death practices, public policy, palliative care, digital memorialisation, ecological approaches to body disposal, and the evolving field of death studies in Australia. The event aims to foster interdisciplinary dialogue, strengthen research networks, and contribute to the development of a uniquely Australian voice in international death studies scholarship.
